Marott Woods Nature Preserve Bird Hike – September 16, 2023
On Saturday, September 16th at 8:00 am, 18 birders gathered at Marott Woods Nature Preserve in Indianapolis for a bird hike. The hike was led by ABAS members Chuck Anderson, Becky Lomax-Sumner and Becky Heck. The temperature was in the low 50s to start, with partly cloudy skies and no noticeable wind.
Our primary goal was to view migrating warblers but there were not as many sightings as hoped. For the morning we had 6 warbler species highlighted by a Golden-winged Warbler and 2 Ovenbird. Several Red-eyed Vireo and Warbling Vireo were active and quite vocal. A Red-shouldered Hawk was seen being mobbed by multiple Blue Jays before flying off.
Our total for the hike was 31 bird species. It was a beautiful morning to be outdoors.
