On June 11th, seven ABAS members, including three board members, gathered for Climate Watch surveys for the spring/summer season. Climate Watch, a citizen science program developed by the National Audubon Society, aims to document species’ responses to climate change. Our observations made in the field help test the climate models developed by National Audubon. The program has certain protocols for survey locations, ensuring data collection is far enough away from the last survey point to avoid double counting. We had enough volunteers to split into two groups and survey two larger survey squares, meaning more data could be collected.
We looked for five species: American Goldfinch, Eastern Bluebird, Eastern Towhee, and White or Red-breasted Nuthatches. We found three of the five target species in the six different parks in Carmel surveyed that morning!
