Conservation
Bird conservation practices are increasingly necessary to address the impacts of human activities that have accelerated extinctions and continue to threaten bird populations in Indiana, the United States, and worldwide.
Habitat loss and fragmentation, human disturbance, chemical toxins and pollution, as well as introduced diseases, predators, and competitors are some of the threats that need to be addressed to reverse bird declines and maintain healthy populations.
The main objectives of bird conservation are to
- Identify population declines that signal underlying degradation of habitats and ecosystems
- Identify the causes for these declines, and
- Find biological solutions such as habitat preservation which can be used to repair the underlying causes of bird declines.
Conservation Efforts
Central Indiana Land Trust, Inc.
CILTI's mission is to preserve the best of Central Indiana’s natural areas, protecting plants and animals, so Hoosiers can experience the wonder of the state’s natural heritage. ABAS has donated over $200,00 to specific projects important to birds.
Injured & Orphaned Animals
Information on what to do with injured and orphaned animals including a list of Indiana wildlife rehabilitators.
Cornell University’s Citizen Science Program
Each day, bird watchers report tens of thousands of bird observations to citizen-science projects at the Cornell Lab of Ornithology, contributing to the world’s most dynamic and powerful source of information on birds.
Cats Indoors!
Domestic cats can make wonderful pets. But when allowed to roam outdoors, these introduced predators have serious consequences. The American Bird Conservancy's Cats Indoors Program educates the public and policy makers about the many benefits to birds, cats, and people when cats are maintained indoors.
Important Bird Areas
Important Bird Areas, or IBAs, are sites that provide essential habitat for one or more bird species. IBAs include sites for breeding, wintering, and/or migrating birds. IBAs may be a few acres, but they are usually sites or landscapes that stand out from their surroundings.
Bird Safe Indy
Bird Safe Indy is an initiative of Amos Butler Audubon Society. The mission of the program is preventing bird deaths and saving energy by promoting bird-safe buildings and reducing nighttime lighting.
