Join ABAS Education Chair and experienced birder, Jessica Helmbold, for a bird walk at Laura Hare Nature Preserve at Blossom Hollow in Johnson County. The hike will take place on Saturday, April 19, 2025 from 8:00-10:00 am.

This is the first hike that ABAS has offered at Laura Hare Nature Preserve which is a CILTI (Central Indiana Land Trust) site. From the CILTI website is the description: “Blossom Hollow is part of a large unbroken hardwood forest block, habitat that is key for migratory birds and forest interior nesting birds. On its ridges, mature white and red oaks cling to slopes covered with ferns and wildflowers. In the creek valley below, the bedrock is dotted with granite chunks — evidence of the glaciers that once covered these hills.

When walking the trail at Blossom Hollow, listen for the fluting of wood thrush. You might also hear the voices of two birds considered rare in Indiana: Worm-eating and Hooded Warblers. These migratory birds breed in the protected habitat of the forest interior.”

This is a great opportunity to visit one of Johnson County’s pristine locations. The hike is limited to 10 people, is open to anyone, but ABAS members will have priority. Participants are to meet at the Trafalgar branch of the Johnson County Public Library at 7:45 to carpool. The lot at the CILTI site is small.
