Garfield Park, while being a very urban park, is a sanctuary for wildlife. Join a park naturalist on a walk through the park in search of birds. Even if you have never been on a bird walk before or consider yourself an expert birder, this program is for everyone. Remember to wear comfortable walking shoes and bring binoculars. If you don’t have binoculars, a limited number will be available for use to anyone who needs them.

Depending on the rules at the time, masks will likely be required for most of the hike. There may be times we can spread out and take a quick break from the masks. Check the ABAS calendar to be sure the hike isn't canceled.

Learn about Chimney Swifts as the sun sets with ABAS Education Chair and Indy Park naturalist Jessica Helmbold. Bring lawn chairs or blankets, and your binoculars to observe an active colony at Garfield Park Arts Center. There is a limit of 15 participants at this Indy Parks event. Registration is required.

The Nina Mason Pulliam EcoLab is a wonderful place to bird watch, with over 165 different species sightings being recorded since 2002. No experience is necessary, and the hike will be led by one of the bird experts at Marian. The only things that are necessary are binoculars and a little bit of patience!
We will meet at the St. Francis statue just west of the Allison Mansion on the Marian campus at 8:00 am every Wednesday starting September 1 and ending November 17. Bring water to drink and wear comfortable shoes. No reservation is required

Join local birder and ABAS field trip leader, Terry Ballenger, as we look for migrating fall warblers and local resident birds in the 800-acre park. We’ll meet at the Taylor Center of Natural History building parking lot at 8:00 am and bird on foot from there. The terrain is flat and the trails are well defined. The Taylor Center opens at 10:00 am and has modern, well-maintained restrooms, as well as great cultural exhibits. There is no fee for the field trip. However, it is limited to 12 participants, and registration is required.
